Zoe steps in for her scheduled playdate with Elmo, regrettably bringing along her pet rock, Rocco. Rocco conveys to Zoe his desire for a separate playdate. Elmo proposes they simply find another rock, but Zoe explains that Rocco finds other rocks mundane, unlike himself, who's "a rock that embraces life fully." Zoe enumerates a variety of characteristics Rocco seeks in a prospective friend, the most notable being roundness.

Elmo dashes off and returns with a balloon, but Rocco insists on a friend with a face and hair. Alan, overhearing the conversation, suggests that Elmo could put his artistic abilities to good use and create a friend for Rocco. Elmo consents and breaks into a song about how he's "Gonna Make a New Friend."

Upon completing the creation, Elmo names it "Balloono." Before they can proceed to the crafts, Zoe insists that the two entities get to know each other. Rocco approves of his new companion and proposes a jumping competition for their playdate. Balloono goes first, but it doesn't return to the ground; it ascends into the sky. Alan highlights that the helium in the balloon is responsible for its floating.

Rocco requires a new friend, so Zoe suggests that a heavier friend would be appropriate. Elmo finds an egg from which to create a friend, singing his song again as he adds a face and a cowboy outfit. Rocco's next companion is Eggy, who he agrees to befriend. They start a game of Patty Cake, but Rocco accidentally breaks Eggy.

Alan brings a sponge to clean up the mess, and Elmo recognizes that the sponge is round, not overly light, and durable, which would make an excellent companion! He and Zoe reprise his song as they create Rocco's new buddy, Sponge-arino. Sponge-arino neither floats away during the jumping game nor breaks during Patty Cake, making him the perfect companion! Now, Zoe is prepared to commence her playdate with Elmo, and the two begin brainstorming new companions they can introduce to Rocco.
