Alan and Big Bird are about to welcome the viewer when they see Bert struggling to move his bed outside. Bert explains that he's seeking a calm place for his nap. Puzzled as to why Bert can't nap at home, he explains the earlier events. In a flashback, Bert and Ernie return home from a bike ride. Bert is ready for a nap, but Ernie's enthusiastic plan to go rollerskating disrupts Bert's tranquility. Ernie's attempts to help Bert sleep - playing a loud trumpet lullaby and summoning sheep for Bert to count - result in more chaos. Overwhelmed, Bert decides to take his bed and find a quieter place to nap.
Back in the present, Bert starts questioning his friendship with Ernie. Alan and Big Bird reassure him that friends can have disagreements and still make amends. Bert, however, prefers to concentrate on his nap for now. Big Bird allows Bert to nap in his nest, but the arrival of Big Bird's bird buddies, all eager to nap too, leaves Bert squashed. When Big Bird also tries to join, Bert decides he needs to find another place.
Bert drags his bed into Hooper's Store, promising Alan that he won't be a disturbance. However, Alan trips over the bed while collecting a banana delivery, causing a mess. Alan assures Bert he can find him the perfect, peaceful spot for his nap.
Meanwhile, back at the apartment, Ernie starts missing Bert and wonders what made him so angry. Ernie's sheep friends point out Ernie's inconsiderate actions and reassure him that he and Bert can still be friends. They show Ernie how to apologize, prompting Ernie to set out to make things right.
Alan has moved Bert and his bed onto the community center's roof, a calm and peaceful spot. However, Bert can't fall asleep without Ernie's familiar presence. Just then, Ernie arrives, apologizes, and reassures Bert about their friendship. Too excited to nap now, Bert suggests they go rollerskating. Alan is relieved they've reconciled but realizes they've left Bert's bed on the roof.
