Oscar gets a Rottendoodle named Cranky

Grundgetta spends time with her Rottendoodle, Itchy—a flea-infested Grouch dog that completely disregards her commands. Seeing this, Oscar inquires where he can get a Rottendoodle for himself. Grundgetta contacts the breeder, Mr. Blechstein, who ensures that Oscar will provide a suitably grouchy home for his new Rottendoodle. Blechstein hands Oscar a pet care book and the leash to his new pet, Cranky.

Upon meeting, Cranky attempts to lick Itchy clean, much to Grundgetta's annoyance. She takes her dog home, while Oscar browses through the pet care book. He commands Cranky to sit and fetch, and to his astonishment, she complies and even gives him a kiss! As Bob passes by, Cranky showers him with affection, delighting Bob. To Oscar's chagrin, his pet starts helping everyone on Sesame Street—retrieving Bob's glasses and saving Elmo when his tricycle careens out of control.

When Grundgetta returns, she's shocked to find Oscar's pet to be helpful, loving, clean, and obedient. She hypothesizes that Cranky must be ill, prompting Oscar to take his dog to Gina's veterinary practice. At Gina's office, Cranky is given a clean bill of health and even aids in healing a sickly Henrietta. Oscar is taken aback, but Gina assures him that dogs can surprise their owners with their behavior.

Contemplating giving his pet away, Oscar has a change of heart after singing "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Fur," accompanied by a montage of fond memories. Gina brings in Mrs. Dogooder, who is interested in adopting Oscar's pet. However, Oscar informs her that Cranky isn't up for adoption. Despite her helpful, loving, clean, and obedient nature, Cranky is also irritating—a true Grouch's dream pet!
