Parent's Guide

Just as Alan is about to start reading the story, customers arrive at the store. Because the customers take priority, Alan postpones reading. This upsets Julia very much. Alan tries to remedy the situation by bringing the children snacks. He offers them the alternative of drawing pictures to calm them down. Julia and her friends try to adapt to this new plan. In life, things don't always go as planned. Responsibilities or unexpected events may require us to change our priorities.

It's natural to feel sad when an activity we wanted to do is canceled or doesn't happen. However, it's possible to fill this void by creating something new. Creating is a path to healing. We build our own world:

Julia doesn't want to do anything except story time. But with Elmo and Rosita's support, she starts painting. Julia paints story time. Elmo draws the moment he played ball with Alan. Rosita puts the moment Alan brought them snacks on paper. Finally, they combine these three different pictures. They create their own book and name it “Kind Alan.”

Elmo and Abby think about kindness. They say that planting flowers is a kind act towards the earth. They realize that recycling is kind to the environment. Cookie Monster making fruit smoothies for his friends is an act of kindness. Even seeing the effort that goes into making milk creates awareness. The characters spread kindness to every area of life. Being kind isn't just about saying thank you to someone. Making time for someone, protecting nature, or helping a living creature is also kindness.

When a friend is disappointed, being there for them is the greatest support. Just being there is sometimes enough:

Julia is very upset because her plans have changed. She runs away crying to the community center. Elmo and Rosita don't leave her alone. They immediately follow her and offer her games to play. They realize that Julia just wants story time. They wait patiently by her side without pressuring her. When Alan comes and shows interest in them, they all work together to find a solution to calm Julia down.

The children talk about how nice Alan is to them. They don't forget his kindness. That's why they want to show him their love. They take the “Kind Alan” book they made and go to Alan. They read the book aloud to him. They make Alan the hero of the story. In this way, they show their gratitude to Alan with a wonderful gift. There are endless ways to thank people who are kind to us. Showing someone that you appreciate them ensures that the kindness continues. Gratitude is a feeling that multiplies when shared.
