Gordon greets the viewer while sweeping up some dirt, only to find more dirt being thrown around. He discovers a woman, Mary Mary Quite Contrary, dumping dirt around Oscar's trash can. Oscar appreciates the dirt, and Mary Mary introduces herself and her helper, Mother Goose. They plan to create a unique garden around Oscar's can using silver bells, cockle shells, and three pretty maids all in a row, who appear and sing each time they're mentioned. Gordon points out that a real garden typically consists of living flowers and plants. Inspired, Mary Mary changes her plans and plants beautiful flowers instead, much to Oscar's displeasure.

Alan and Gina visit Oscar's trash can and find it surrounded by a lovely garden. Oscar informs them that it's Mary Mary's garden and shoos them away after summoning the pretty maids. Both Gordon and Bob admire the garden, but Oscar still isn't happy. Gordon suggests that Oscar politely ask Mary Mary to move the garden, but she refuses. Determined to reclaim his space, Oscar enlists the help of Mother Gross, who sends Hairy Hairy More Contrary, Mary Mary's Grouch counterpart. Hairy Hairy plants stinkweed and skunk cabbage and brings in pigs to make a mess. Surprisingly, Mary Mary appreciates the changes and finds them beautiful. Hairy Hairy leaves, not wanting her work to be admired. While Gordon is bothered by the chaos, Oscar loves it and hopes Mary Mary will keep the garden this way. In her typical contrary fashion, she decides to move the garden instead. As Gordon sweeps up the remaining dirt, Oscar feels a bit sad but is relieved to have his space back. Unfortunately for him, the three pretty maids remain, continuing to sing their song.
