Ernie encounters Gordon and Miles playing basketball and, although he wants to return to Bert, they persuade him to join their game. Meanwhile, Bert reads but starts feeling uneasy with the silence. When the basketball game ends, Ernie is directed to a Birdketeer meeting. There, he participates in "Bird Follow the Leader" led by Big Bird. Curious about Ernie's whereabouts, Bert leaves the apartment to find him. After the Birdketeer meeting, Ernie joins Big Bird and Snuffy for "The Snuffleupagus Alphabet." Eventually, Bert finds Ernie and expresses his feelings about being left alone. They all come together to celebrate Bert's birthday.
