Of all the relationships that exist in the vast world of One Piece created by Eiichiro Oda, probably one of the most interesting and complex was between Monkey D. Luffy and Sir Crocodile. From bitter enemies to even more unlikely allies, their interactions had a great impact on how the narrative developed through the series.
Initial Conflict: Alabasta Arc
The relationship of Luffy and Crocodile started off as a fierce antagonism during the Alabasta Arc. Having the epithet of "Sir Crocodile" and holding the position of one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he was technically the main antagonist for this particular arc. He led a criminal organization called Baroque Works, which was trying to overthrow the kingdom of Alabasta.
It was during this arc that Luffy faced Crocodile for three successive matches. In the first two matches, Luffy was defeated by Crocodile. It showed that he had greater power and how one could control his powers from the consumed Logia-type devil fruit, the Sand-Sand Fruit. However, through their last battle, Luffy came out victorious, striking at the heart of Crocodile's schemes and pride.
Impel Down: An Unexpected Alliance
Indeed, the dynamic interactions between Luffy and Crocodile were a shocker during the Impel Down Arc. Defeated by him in Alabasta, Crocodile ended up being taken into the underwater prison of Impel Down. This rather unexpected alliance was formed as part of Luffy's quest to save his brother, Portgas D. Ace.
This temporary alliance brought out the practical side in both characters. Luffy, a man powered by justice, would now put aside his prejudice to work with one of his enemies in order to save his brother. Crocodile seized an opportunity to escape and be relevant once again.
Marineford War: Fighting on the Same Side
This alliance carried over into the Marineford Arc when both of them joined forces for the Summit War of Marineford. It was during this battle, in particular, that Crocodile sided with Luffy and other prisoners who were all escaped from Impel Down to fight against the Marines.
This further complicated their relationship, as what Crocodile did during the war sometimes did not align with Luffy's goals. While technically on the same side, his motives remained self-serving, standing in sharp contrast to Luffy's singular focus on saving Ace.
The "Crocodile is Luffy's Mother" Theory
There's a fan theory making its way through the One Piece community: Crocodile might, in fact, be Luffy's mother. If one had not known that already, this theory would shed some more light on another layer of their relationship.
It's been born from a weird interaction between Crocodile and Emporio Ivankov. She's the queen of the Kamabakka Kingdom and is known for her hormone-changing abilities in people. Some fans believe that he was the one who changed Crocodile from a woman into a man.
Although this theory is not yet confirmed, it has created heated debates concerning what this will do to Luffy and Crocodile's relationship. Again, since no concrete evidence in the manga or anime has appeared, this is only speculative.
Character Parallels and Contrasts
Despite their hostile first impressions, Luffy and Crocodile actually share some interesting parallels with each other. Both characters inspire a very high degree of loyalty in their respective crews. The Straw Hat Pirates under Luffy and the Baroque Works organization under Crocodile are strong testimonials to how much their various members are willing to respect, follow, and lay down their lives for their leaders—albeit for entirely different reasons.
What sets them apart, however, is their leadership styles and the motivating factors. Luffy's leadership was based upon his belief in his friends and himself to become a pirate king; that of Crocodile was based on fear and manipulation, with his ultimate goal being gaining power.
The relation between Monkey D. Luffy and Sir Crocodile in One Piece is such that it embodies the depth of character dynamics attainable by a series. From Alabasta, the very first fight, to Impel Down and Marineford's impromptu alliance, how things have gone about revising their encounters has just been one sweet surprise after another. The two will probably never be friends, per se, but the bonds forged by these experiences continue to interest fans in this series.
