What is Moon Breathing Technique?
The Moon Breathing Technique is a powerful and rare swordsmanship style featured in the popular manga and anime series, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. It is one of the original Breathing Styles in the Demon Slayer universe and is closely tied to the Upper Moon One demon, Kokushibo, who was a skilled practitioner of this style when he was a human Demon Slayer. The technique harnesses the power of the moon and consists of a series of elegant and fluid sword techniques that emphasize speed, precision, and overwhelming power. The movements resemble the moon's path across the sky and its ever-changing phases, making it a captivating and formidable swordsmanship style.
The History of Moon Breathing Technique
Kokushibo, born as Michikatsu Tsugikuni, was once a Demon Slayer and a sibling to Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the creator of the Sun Breathing Technique. While Yoriichi was the prodigy who developed the original and most powerful Breathing Technique, Michikatsu felt overshadowed and grew envious of his brother's abilities. In his pursuit of power, he created the Moon Breathing Technique as a counterpart to the Sun Breathing. This technique focused on fluid and graceful movements, mirroring the ever-changing nature of the moon. Eventually, Michikatsu's jealousy and desire for power led him to become a demon. He was transformed by Muzan Kibutsuji, the primary antagonist of the series and the first demon. As a demon, Michikatsu adopted the name Kokushibo and continued to hone his skills in the Moon Breathing Technique. Over the centuries, he became one of the strongest demons, earning the title of Upper Moon One. It is not taught within the Demon Slayer Corps, and its knowledge is limited to a select few. Characters such as Muichiro Tokito and Genya Shinazugawa briefly access the technique, showcasing its power and potential.
Using the Moon Breathing Technique in Battles
Kokushibo vs. Demon Slayers: During the Infinity Castle Arc, Kokushibo faces several Demon Slayers, including Gyomei Himejima (Stone Hashira), Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind Hashira), and Obanai Iguro (Serpent Hashira). In this battle, Kokushibo's Moon Breathing allows him to effectively counter the Hashiras' attacks and overwhelm them with his speed, power, and technique. He employs various Moon Breathing forms, such as Dark Moon: Elegant Performance and Moonlit Chaos, to demonstrate his dominance over the skilled Demon Slayers.
Kokushibo vs. Muichiro Tokito: Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira, faces Kokushibo in the same battle alongside the other Hashiras. Muichiro discovers that he is a descendant of Kokushibo, and this revelation grants him access to the Moon Breathing Technique. Muichiro uses this newfound power to challenge Kokushibo, employing some of the Moon Breathing forms in combat. However, Kokushibo's experience and mastery of the technique ultimately prove too much for the young Hashira.
Kokushibo vs. Genya Shinazugawa: In a desperate attempt to defeat Kokushibo, Genya Shinazugawa, a Demon Slayer and Sanemi's younger brother, consumes a part of Kokushibo to gain demonic powers temporarily. This grants him access to a limited version of the Moon Breathing Technique.

Third Form: Loathsome Moon, Chains of Fate - The user slashes their sword in a series of rapid, precise strikes, creating numerous crescent moon-shaped projectiles that home in on the target, making it difficult for enemies to evade.
Fourth Form: Crimson Moon, Half Moon - The user executes a powerful upward slash, generating a crescent moon-shaped energy wave that can slice through enemies and obstacles with ease.
Fifth Form: Moon Spirit Calamitous Eddy - In this form, the user performs a series of spinning slashes, creating a whirlwind of crescent moon-shaped energy that can engulf and tear apart enemies within its range.
Sixth Form: Perpetual Night, Lonely Moon - The user unleashes a series of rapid slashes, moving at incredible speed while leaving crescent moon-shaped energy trails behind them. This form can quickly overwhelm and disorient enemies, making it difficult for them to counter or escape.
